Gardening Tips For Children

Apart from the fact that flower gardens impose some striking beauty to our yards or compounds, they too can be a source of education and fun for the kids too. Its an undeniable fact that most children who love adventure and exploration, love getting their hands extremely blowzy. Better still, by providing them with a small piece of land, just next to yours, to cultivate on, you are likely to make things even more exhilarating. In order to be a successive parent-teacher, here are a few guidelines that you should apply onto them.

Give some good guidance on how seedlings should be planted, at what depth they should be buried and how the weeds should be extracted. And since they are ever inquisitive about everything and anything that floods their minds, be at the front line to answer any questions they may pose onto you.

Since it’s a kid-sized plot of land, the tools required should strictly be for kids. Most of the garden accidents occur as a result of careless handling of garden tools. That’s why its advisable to ensure that dangerous tools are kept far away as possible, from your children. In addition, teach them on how to clean, store and use their garden tools. Its also good to alert them on the possible dangers that are caused by various chemicals and pesticides.

If your kids are fascinated by flowers, its good to jump-start with a few simple ones like marigolds, sunflowers and zinnias. Theses flowers are easy to maintain and at the same time much affordable. On the other hand, if the children like planting vegetables, try planting simple ones like strawberries, carrots, tomatoes, green onions, snow peas, green beans, lettuce and pumpkins. Don’t forget to inform them on which plants require lots of sunlight and shade in order to blossom.

Educate the children on some of the creepy insects that they are likely to find in the garden, by isolating those that are dangerous- hairy caterpillars, squirrels, moths, aphids, centipedes, hole spiders, rabbits; and those that aren’t- bees, butterflies, earthworms and ladybirds among others.

Another fundamental tip that you should teach them on garden beauty is how to water their vegetables or flowers. Let them know that its very essential to water the garden regularly, and again, not to over doing it. You can also teach them on the benefits of preserving moisture in the ground through mulching.

Rest assured that, with each passing day, your children will grow with the knowledge of maintaining good gardens in their minds, and at the same time, educating their fellow friends on the benefits of having a garden, both in front and the back, of the house. You will be stunned by the look on their faces when they earn their very own money from the harvest on their gardens. You will have set an example to the other parents who don’t encourage their children to participate in any kind of garden work within your neighborhood.
